Is your site or application hosted at CDH? Here's what you need to know to decide whether or not to keep your site, and how to move forward if you do!

A little background. Exciting digital activity in the Humanities is growing by leaps and bounds, and CDH is being asked to host an increasing number of websites and applications. Because of this growth, CDH needs to modify our hosting services, and also check in with our existing customers.

We will continue to provide an entirely free web hosting tier, using software called CPanel, for partners whose sites use either the Wordpress, Drupal, or Omeka content management systems and are smaller than 1GB. For sites that do not fit those requirements, or that need higher performance than our free tier offers, we are willing to host a virtual private server (VPS) for your site. As much as possible, we will try to keep this service free, as well. However, due to the significantly higher maintenance costs of a VPS, we may need to pass some or all of that cost on to you, the site owner. In both cases, we are only able to maintain the server and server software itself; it will continue to be your responsibility as the site owner to maintain the hosted website. However, we are happy to provide you or your website administrator training to do that.

We need to hear from you by June 15! If your site is hosted at CDH, we need to know if you want to continue to keep it active, or if it can be turned off. You may have received an email from CDH asking you to contact us about your site. Even if you did not, we still need to hear from you if you are a site or application owner. Because many sites are running on outdated systems that may not be secure, we need to know by June 15th if it should remain active or not. If we don't hear from you by June 15th, your site will be turned off.

What happens next? The answer may depend, which is why we prefer to talk to you about next steps. In general, the options are as follows:

  • If we haven't heard from you we will turn off the site on June 15th. We will archive the site until the end of 2015, and can make that archive available to you as a zip file. After December 2015, we will delete the site and the archive. You can contact us any time to retrieve your archive. We are happy to advise you on what to do from there.
  • Once we hear from you we will ask you to decide if you want to keep the site or application active and hosted by CDH. It's important that we discuss your options so you can make the best possible decision. The options have changed since we first set your site up, and are detailed in the next section. If you decide you no longer need an active site, we can offer you an archive, and that's it. If you may want to keep your site active, read the next section.

To continue to host your site at CDH, here's what you need to know.

  • It has to be kept up-to-date. With so many security risks to online content, we need to be sure your site is running in an updated environment -- the latest version of whatever system you are using (e.g., Wordpress, Omeka, PHP, etc.).
  • If your site is not up-to-date, you will need to migrate it to the latest version. Depending on how old your site is, this may take some work. We'll be able to advise you on that. For those who do need to migrate, CDH is offering one-time help during summer 2015 to migrate your site to an updated system. Depending on the complexity of your site, you will need to commit to being available for 1-4 weeks during the summer to work with our staff, if a full migration is needed.
  • The site owner is responsible for maintaining the site. To accommodate demand and also enable you to do what you want on your site, CDH can no longer be responsible for maintaining your site. As site owner, you will have to maintain the content and ensure that the site is updated to the latest version. We will be glad to show you how to do this; it's usually quite simple!
  • CDH needs to know the status of the site. To ensure that we are hosting only active sites and applications, CDH will need to do an annual status check with you. This will be a simple check to see if you still need the site or not. At that time, we may also need to update you on any changes in our hosting service, and give you a chance to decide if you want to stay with us. We hope you do!
