Most departmental printers can be printed to from any computer connected to the internet, including laptops connected to the campus wireless network. To do so, add the printer to your computer using an appropriate method below.

Note: To print on wireless, you MUST be connected to the UCLA_WIFI network.

You will need to know the printer's queue name. If you don't know it, ask your DTA.

In the following directions, we will use an example queue name: ry123-fre-hp2200

  1. Click the Windows “Start” button
  2. Click the “Control Panel”
  3. Double click “Printers and Faxes”
  4. Click “Add Printer” on the left hand side
  5. Click “Next” at the Add a Printer Welcome Screen
  6. Select the “A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer” radio button at the Local or Network Printer Screen.
  7. Select the “Find a printer the directory” radio button at the Specify a Printer Screen.
  8. Type in your building code into the “Name” field under the Printers tab in the Find Printers Screen.  Press “Find Now."
    • Building codes are as follows:
      • Royce:  RY
      • Rolfe:  RF
      • Humaniteis: HM
      • Haines:  HA
      • Campbell:  CB
      • Clark:  CL
      • Dodd:  DO
      • Schoenberg:  SB
      • Public Policy:  PP
  9. Select the printer you would like to print to and then press “OK”.
  10. The drivers will be installed and downloaded to your PC.  Done.

Adding a printer to an on-campus computer (PC on Windows XP)

This applies to most computers connected to the campus network via a network cable. If this doesn't work, follow directions for adding a printer to an off-campus computer (below).

  1. Go to the Start menu => Printers and Faxes => Add Printer, Next
  2. A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer, Next
  3. Find a printer in the directory, Next
  4. Type the printer queue name in the “Name” box (ex: ry123-fre-hp2200)
  5. Type in your building code into the “Name” field under the Printers tab in the Find Printers Screen.  Press “Find Now."
    • Building codes are as follows:
      • Royce:  RY
      • Rolfe:  RF
      • Humaniteis: HM
      • Haines:  HA
      • Campbell:  CB
      • Clark:  CL
      • Dodd:  DO
      • Schoenberg:  SB
      • Public Policy:  PPB
  6. Select the desired printer.
  7. Finish the procedure as you normally would for adding a new printer (click Ok/Next/Finish)

Adding a printer to an off-campus computer (PC on Windows XP)

This includes laptops connected to the campus wireless (UCLAWLAN).

  1. Go to the Start menu => Printers and Faxes => Add Printer, Next
  2. Local printer attached to this computer, uncheck Automatically detect..., Next
  3. Create a new port: Standard TCP/IP Port, Next
  4. Next
  5. Printer Name or IP Address: queue.humnet.ucla.edu, Next
  6. Next, Finish
  7. When the printer is created, right-click it, Properties => Port tab
  8. Protocol: LPR, Queue name: (ex: ry123-fre-hp2200)
  9. Check LPR Byte Counting Enabled, OK, OK

Adding a printer to a computer (PC on Windows 7)

This includes laptops connected to the campus wireless (UCLAWLAN & UCLA_WIFI).

  1. Go to the Start (Window Icon) menu => Devices and Printers => Add A Printer, Next
  2. Add a local printer
  3. Create a new port: Standard TCP/IP Port, Next
  4. Host Name or IP Address: queue.humnet.ucla.edu, Next
  5. On the Additional Port Information Required Page, just click Next.
  6. On the Install the printer driver page, select the appropriate driver from the list matching manufacturer with the printer model, Next.
  7. Give your printer a name in which you will be able to easily identify it with, Next
  8. Finish
  9. When the printer is created, left-click it in the Devices and Printers menu, at the top of the window click Print server Properties => Port tab
  10. Find the port named queue.humnet.ucla.edu, left-click it and select Configure Port
  11. Under Protocol select: LPR, then under LPR Settings type in the queue name: (ex: ry123-fre-hp2200)
  12. Check LPR Byte Counting Enabled, OK, OK

Adding a printer to a Mac (on- or off-campus)

  1. Download and install the drivers (for OS X) for your printer. You can find the drivers at your printer manufacturer's website.
  2. Go to the Apple (upper-left corner) => System Preferences
  3. Go to Print & Fax
  4. Add a new printer (“+”)
  5. Click IP Printer at the top
  6. Use these settings...
    Protocol: Line Printer Daemon – LPD
    Address: queue.humnet.ucla.edu
    Queue: (ex: ry123-fre-hp2200) Note*: Please consult with your DTA regarding your department printer queue name Find Your DTA.
  7. Name: [whatever you want to name it]
    Location: [whatever, preferably the location of the printer]
    Print Using: (select your printer model)
